The Mararay palm, also called Corocito, Chascaraiza or Corozo rojo, is a palm that delights. Its ripe, deep red fruits are food for bluebirds (Thraupis episcopus) as well as for different types of birds, and a traditional Antioquia candy is made from it, with a flavor and texture reminiscent of coconut. This plant is native to South America and is found in the humid and dry areas of the country. It can grow up to 18 meters and its life span extends up to 60 years.
Its leaves are one of the characteristics that make it unique. They are arranged in a fan-like shape and resemble fish tails, an arrangement that only occurs in a few species of palms in the world.
